California Ballot Measures
November 4, 2008 at 9:53 am | Posted in breaking news, the forg | 3 CommentsThis post is for anyone with questions / virulent opinions / chitchat / polling updates about the 12 propositions on California’s state ballot.
For those who aren’t in California, or for those of you who are still pondering, here are two resources for your consideration:
CA Green Party Recommendations: http://www.cagreens.org/elections/2008/Propositions.081104.shtml
Courage Campaign Recommendations: http://www.couragecampaign.org/2008VoterGuide
CA residents — how did you vote? Why? (If you feel comfortable sharing, of course.) Which propositions do you think represent an historic step (in either direction) for us?

I’ll start. As I wrote over at Modern Mitzvot (my comment’s pending approval, so no direct link yet), I ended up voting No on 3 ($2 Billion Children’s Hospital Bond) even though it makes me sound like a Grinch. But really: more money to private hospitals? When King Drew just closed last year? I voted no on both alternative energy proposals because of similar flaws in where the funding would go; to me Prop 3 is no different.

I voted no on 3 as well because someone told me that there’s still unspent money available.
My votes pretty much matched the Greens (thanks for the link?!). I hope 8 fails but I’ve been posting on a local forum and got tons of hate emails back telling me I’ll burn in hell for letting abominable sinners marry and babies get murdered. Now I cherish hate mail like everyone else but tons?!
I voted yes on the drug rehab programs b/c there’s too few of those especially residential and that won’t change unless the attitude changes. The other “crime” bills, are so unconstitutional if they pass, they’ll go to court.
California’s getting pricey to live in and if 8 passes, maybe I’ll finally move.

I have a totally skewed view on 4 & 8 because I’ve been volunteering a lot for the NO on 4 campaign and because I live in LA County so I see far more NO on 8 signs/hear more ads than (I’m sure) folks in inland CA. I know the polls for both are very close, though, so that’s encouraging.
I am so excited about Prop 5 and I really hope it will pass, although I have no sense on how it’s polling. In the circles I run in, at least, that has not gotten enough air time. That is the kind of serious sentencing overhaul that our prison system so desperately needs.
